3 Tips For a Successful Shoot
Hey all!!
Spring is here in full bloom! We got flowers flowering, the sun is sunning, we have more daylight and things are looking good (all things considered). haha.
This month I had the pleasure of getting another headshot shoot in for model castings photos where the client’s friend arrived halfway through. I noticed such a difference in their mojo after their friend arrived compared to when we first started and it made me realize the importance of the following 3 tips to make your photoshoot more successful.
Tip 1: Alway Good to have a “Mr. Jay”
If you’re not used to being in front of the camera but need photos, it would be so helpful to have a friend who knows you well to tag along. They make great hype-people to get you excited and in “model mode”. Another bonus is that they are an extra pair of eyes to see when something might be out of place, wether it be hair, hand placement, or random wrinkles in clothes. The fact that they know you well is also helpful because they are able to read your body language and assist in helping you get the best poses/ shots possible. During this past shoot, the client became a lot more easy going once their Mr. Jay arrived haha.
Tip 2: Put on some good beats
Before a client arrives, I try to find some tunes on Spotify to help get them in the groove. We’ve all had that moment where a song makes us feel like Naomi Campbell/ Tyson Beckford strutting down a catwalk! Rihanna is my usual go to, but I also might try some Beyoncé or a top 40 list. This past shoot’s featured artist was Miss Nicki Minaj; the smile became more natural, the body was starting to feel the beat, and the photos snapped were coming out right. Music is definitely a must have no matter if your indoors or outside. So on your next shoot sure to ask the client/ model if they have a fave artist that gets them hype and get the beats goin’.
Tip 3: Set the ambience
This is more personal preference, but I’ve seen the results and stand by it. I have a small essential oil diffuser that i put on with some peppermint and lemon oil (just a couple drops each) to make the place smell really nice. I shoot in my home and have pets, so I always want to make sure the place smells nice when greeting guests. Adding this small touch really is like icing on the cake. Most people don’t notice the diffuser but remember that the space felt and smelled good and relaxing. Being in front of the camera can be nerve wracking so any little bit helps.
