What's In My Camera Bag 2021!

Hello everyone, and happy February!!

I hope everyone has been sticking to their goals and starting the year off accomplishing goals big and small. To kick of my goal of posting once a month, I’ve decided to start with a “Gear check” of sorts. One of the things that I have done is slowly gather a decent little kit of photography gear for occasional shooting as well as professional shoots. I felt a gear check to show what I use and how I am using it would be a great starting point for the year.

First let’s start with my camera bag(s). This is literally the first item I bought after buying my camera body. It’s the Lowepro BP 3OO AW . This model is the perfect size for going on shoots I’ve come to learn. Up until recently my lenses were on the smaller side, so this bag seemed a bit too big, but now that I have a zoom lens (more on that in a minute) It’s become the perfect bag to pack when going to shoot on location. It has a bunch of storage that can be adjusted to fit your liking (the 2 main columns are pretty set in place though). The front flap can fit a tablet and a notepad (letter/A4 size) as well as few other loose items using the different compartments.

I also have this Lowepro BP150 that I use for when I’m doing a little city exploring or casual shooting. It has this handy pouch at the top to put all your lil knickknacks in so they’re not bouncing around in your bag, a descent place to place your tablet; I have an Ipad Pro 2017 and have never had an issue with it fitting. So if you need a small camera bag to get around with, this one would be a great fit.

My camera is the Canon 80D. It’s a super reasonable entry level camera, and I’ve loved using it. Not too heavy, flippy screen awesomeness and produces great pictures! For my lenses I currently have 3. My first lens, like most photographers who also had/have aspirations of a YouTube channel, I bought the Canon 50mm f1.8. I actually bought this lens before I even bought the camera body; It was a promise to myself that I’d save and actually buy my camera. The second was a 24mm f2.8 to have a wider angle lens . For the first 2-3 years of me harnessing my skills as a photographer, I used just these 2 lenses honestly. I dreamt of L lenses but that would have to wait as I had pretty poor paying jobs until recently.

My newest addition to the lens family is my 24-70mm L f4 (2.8 is still a bit out of reach for me haha). I’ve honestly been enjoying experimenting with a zoom lens. When I started photography using my Minolta film camera, the zoom lenses provided to many options for me. Using primes as my main lenses for my move to digital forced me to push and be creative to get the shot I saw in my head. Now I’m experiencing the opposite. The photos come out way sharper than my beginner lenses I will say. I am gleefully surprised every time I import to Lightroom. Because my L lens is a f4 I still carry my other lenses whenever I go out to shoot in the event I need a faster lens even though they might not be as super sharp. Always good to be prepared.

I also got on on camera strobe as a supplement to my lens having a higher base aperture. It’s a Neweer NW-645-C TTL. Got it pretty cheap on Amazon despite it being the newer model. It’s proven to be so useful! I used to use my big Newer Vision 4 strobe since it’s battery operated, however, having this smaller format makes it super easy to work in tighter spaces and NYC apartments are no palaces lol.

On the off chance that I need to do audio, I have the Rode Video Micro. For a little guy, it sure does handle some pretty decent sized jobs. Recently I helped someone with video for their Youtube channel and the audio sounded pretty sweet (if I say so myself). I haven’t used it to record myself yet, but I’m glad I have it for the day I finally have the guts to enter the Youtube arena.

That’s it for my standard gear I travel with. I also have a standard 5 in 1 reflector but we all know what these look like right? Tell me, what’s your go to setup for when you go out to shoot, and for what type of photography? I‘d love to hear more.

Till Next Time
