Remembering What Counts: At the Highline
So after watching a Peter Mckinnon “Edit Your Pictures” video, I was reminded that I need to get back into the habit of bringing my camera out more often. I usually work pretty late and want nothing more than to go home and sleep after I’m done, but there are some days where there is just enough time for me to walk around NYC a bit and capture some photos. This was one of those days. After work, I walked down the West-side Highway and started snapping pics, not really knowing what I wanted to take pictures of yet. I remembered from a previous Evan Ranft video where he said he will make the effort to go out and shoot even if he doesn’t have an idea in his head yet, and that it would come to him as he progresses. That couldn’t have been truer for me that day. I started to walk the Highline and started to take pics here and there, only to realize there was a commonality beginning to emerge between a majority of them; shapes & texture.
It became the main thing I noticed as I walked the entire Highline. It also reminded me of “Stager Art” a form of art that can be used when staging a location with the intent to sell it (not that it’s a bad thing lol). Normally “stager art” is a lot of the time meant to be diminutive, but from my experience specifying art for multi-million dollar residences. I began to realize some of the subtle nuances they have to have in order to appeal to a vast audience. It’s been a while since I’ve gotten out and snapped some pics, and with winter fast approaching, my windows of opportunity are definitely shrinking. Remembering the words of other creatives helped me to remember what matters most; that I get out there and shoot some pics!! I hope to do this more often and share my experience with you all!
Have you started a project or hobby not knowing what you wanted it to become, only for it to take form on it’s own? What’s your experience with creative block and random projects? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to talk about it more. :D
Till Next Time
